Various studies have shown that the capture and storage of CO2 is necessary in order to be able to meet international agreements on reducing CO2 emissions. CO2 storage is necessary because switching to renewable energy sources on a large scale takes time; during this transition period, CO2 capture offers a solution. CO2 capture and storage is seen as an interim solution for the next 50 to 60 years. By storing CO2, emissions can be significantly reduced quite quickly. If less and less fossil fuels are used by the end of this century, then CO2 capture and storage will no longer be necessary. What has already been stored by then will of course remain stored.
